A photographer in vogue.
Erwin Blumenfeld, who was born in Berlin in 1897 and died in Rome in 1969, was one of the most important fashion photographers of the twentieth century. The exhibition at the Jeu de Paume shows the breadth of his work within the political context of the inter-war period. It also explores his photographs taken ??in Paris and New York, two cities in which he made his mark on fashion photography and advertising images.
His photographs are characterized by minimalism and the use of colour, but also by their modernity and the photographer's perpetual desire to experiment. The exhibition presents mediums used by the artist whose career is marked by innovation with a variety of media including drawing, photography, photomontage and collage.
These experimental works, mainly in black and white, oscillate between portrait and fashion photography.
