The art of confinement.
This exhibition is the first presentation in Paris of an important collection of works from the Pinault collection. Their choice is, naturally, focused on the theme of incarceration as it seemed desirable to establish a strong resonance between contemporary art and the imposing context of the Conciergerie, historically a famous site of detention.
The majority of selected works have never been presented to the public as part of an exhibition. All these works, in their different formats and media (video installations, paintings, sculptures, photographs etc.) refer to all forms of confinement, criminal confinement, political imprisonment, psychological and mental or emotional confinement. This is tackled in a serious or humorous manner. All these works reflect, once again, the artists' ability to respond and take sides.
