Life story of a famous actress.
The best known opera by Francesco Cilea Adriana Lecouvreur is a work based on a play by Eugene Scribe and Ernest Legouve, relating the lifestory of a famous actress at the Comédie-Française called Adrienne Lecouvreur.
The real Adrienne Lecouvreur, who lived from 1692 to 1730, was admired by Voltaire, and considered the best interpreter of Racine and Corneille. Much envied for her talent, she died young, poisoned by a rival, the Duchess of Bouillon.
The delicate musical inventiveness and elegant orchestration of this opera has helped this piece stand the test of time.
